May Goal Review

I feel like I always say this, but June? Really? Although, now that Manny's gone, I'm perfectly content for the months to fly on by. ;) I kind of forgot about the fact that I set goals this month but I think I did ok anyway...

1. Start menu planning.
Um. Well, I kind of did this. You can see my feeble attempts at menu planning here, here, and here. I fell off the wagon for a couple of weeks when I got really busy, but I did get one done this week!

2. Get back to budgeting.
Well. I pretty much ignored this one until the end of the month, but I'm back to it now and feel SO much better!

3. Complete and post cross stitch project.
Obviously that didn't happen. :/ That will be bumped to this month!

4. Do some decluttering/organizing.
I did! Only a little but that's better than none. You can read about Operation Organize: Phase I and Phase II here!

5. Send out Save the Dates.
That didn't happen. But, I'm more than half way through the addressing process and I have already ordered stamps!

Check back tomorrow for my June Goals! Now I'm off to go address Save the Dates!

Menu Plan Monday

Yeah, I skipped Menu Planning for a couple weeks. :/ Shame on me. It was a really hectic couple of weeks and I probably could have used a menu plan to keep from spending so much money...but that's neither here nor there. :) So, here I am, back with a Menu Plan. My goal this week with menu planning is to clean out my pantry.

Menu Plan Monday is hosted by I'm an Organizing Junkie. Click on over and check it out!

breakfast: oatmeal
lunch: grilled cheese, snack crackers
dinner: whole wheat pasta, grilled chicken

breakfast: SlimFast
lunch: turkey and cheese sandwich
dinner: brown rice with chicken and vegetables

breakfast: SlimFast
lunch: leftovers
dinner: grilled cheese

breakfast: oatmeal
lunch: SlimFast
dinner: turkey and cheese sandwich

breakfast: SlimFast
lunch: sandwich
dinner: whole wheat pasta, grilled chicken, vegetables

Ok, so it's not all that exciting, but I'm trying to undo all the damage I've done financially and calorie wise while Lizy was visiting. Ok ok, it's not that bad, but I'm am trying to eat better!

Bridal Shower

One of the things that has kept me so busy lately was planning and throwing a bridal shower for a friend. It was a lot of work and I almost lost my mind for a minute there, but I think it turned out pretty well (and of course the work was totally worth it!) ;) I don't have a whole lot to say about it because it went pretty smoothly, so I'll just get right to the pictures!

Here's a picture of our yummy food!

The super cute, bridal themed plates and napkins

Our mini candy bar (those little things were sooooo good!)

and finally...red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese icing (and festive decoration of course)!

It turned out to be pretty small, but we had a good time and the bride loved it so that's all that matters. :)

Monday, May 23, 2011

Ok, so I feel like I've been away from blogging for forever. Truthfully, it's only been a few days, but I've been slacking on my weekly posts and everything else in between. I have just had no energy for the last week or so and every time I sit down to blog, I want to just sit and vegetate instead. Go figure. Just so I can feel like I've caught you all up, here are some noteworthy things that have happened in the last week or so...

1. Cleaned house in preparation of roommate's brother and girlfriend visiting (i.e. house guests).
2. We had house guests.
3. Friday morning my dog peed on one of my house guests while he was sleeping. FML.
4. Worked 13 hours Saturday.
5. Hosted bridal shower Sunday.
6. Worked 10 hours today.
7. Lost and have no idea where time card is...have to turn it in Tuesday. Shit.

That's about it. But life is just kind of kicking me in the ass right now. Don't get me wrong, things are good, I'm just exhausted.

That's all for now. Be back soon (hopefully). :)

Operation Organize: Phase II, The Bathroom Counter

Ok, so this one is even more embarrassing than the last. Ugh. Why did I decide to reveal all my organizing short-comings. Oh well. No turning back now. ;)

So yeah, my bathroom counter. It wasn't exactly in good shape when Manny left (I meant to clean it back when he was on TDY, but whatever), and then once he left, it really went downhill from there. My bathroom counter ended up looking like a make-up and hair product bomb had gone off in there. And now, without anymore stalling...here's the before picture.

Um, yeah. Horrible. I know. The easy part about this one was that most of this stuff does, in fact, have a home...it just didn't live there. So I cleared everything off, put things back where they belonged, did a little rearranging....and voila!

I can feel y'all breathing a sigh of relief. ;) And the counter is even scrubbed clean (the mirror too!). You'd be surprised how gross a combination of dust, makeup, and hair can be. Ick! The only problem now is the cabinet under the sink. I did clean out and organize that as well but it was more a matter of stacking things neatly than actual organization, so I don't consider that "finished" yet. But hey, some progress is better than no progress!

Getting Back

Ok, so I've been moping around a little the past few days. I think I've had too much free time done too much laying around. Seriously, I have been the biggest bum recently. Having free time would be fine if I had spent the time being busy and productive, but the laying around, not so good.

Anyway, last night I got busy making some cookies to send to Manny. And this morning I finally got my budget back up to date. Admittedly, I've been doing a little more frivolous spending than usual since Manny left and I'd like to cut back on it. What's the best way to control silly spending?...Knowing that you'll have to enter that into your color coded spreadsheet when you get home. ;) Oh, but I do love my color coded spread sheets.

Anyways, I feel a bit more back to normal today so I'll be back in the swing of things soon. :)

Sorry for the lack of posts the last few days. I've been in a sad-my-fiance's-gone funk. Don't worry, I'll be back soon. :)

Operation Organize: Phase I, Closet Under the Stairs

I confess. My house is cluttered. That's what happens when you stuff three fully grown adults into a two bedroom townhouse. Space is a hot commodity in our house and wasting any of it just leads to clutter and general disarray. And thus, Operation Organize was born! Rather than try and tackle the whole house at once, I'm taking it on one space at a time. Divide and conquer, right? :)

Phase I, Closet Under the Stairs
One of our biggest space wasters was the closet under the stairs. Where I saw a giant closet, full of storage potential, the boys saw and oddly shaped closet not good for much of anything. You see, since the closet is, in fact, under the stairs, the ceiling juts down at a sharp angle about halfway into the closet. The key to a closet like this, is not to waste any space. Before you see the "Before" shots, you should know that this closet sits right across from a bathroom. Both doors open into the "hall" so it's impossible to get a good shot of the closet without taking one of the doors off the hinges (which I was so not going to do). And if I simply shut the bathroom door, I can't back up far enough to get a shot of the entire closet. So, the shots lack a little luster, but I did what I could.

Not gonna lie y'all, I'm a little embarassed. So, I pulled everything out of the closet, spread it all over the living room, and then put it back (plus some extra stuff!). And now I give you, a completely full, but much more effectively used space!

That's much better, yes? The closet is packed to capacity now, and fits about twice the amount of stuff that was in it before. :)

I haven't decided what to tackle next, but these are definitely on my To Organize list:
1. kitchen pantry
2. kitchen cabinets
3. bedroom closets
4. linen closet

What have you organized lately? Have any good tips?

Menu Plan Monday

Ok, so I'll confess that I didn't really stick to my menu last week. It was my very first week of menu planning after all. ;) But it did help remind me what I had in the house and I didn't eat out at all during the week. I did grab fast food on the way to work Saturday, but that was kind of an operator error on my part. I totally could have packed but was talking on Skype and lost track of time. :) Anyway, here goes with the second week!...

breakfast: SlimFast
lunch: sandwich, carrots with ranch
dinner: pasta with olive oil

Tuesday (My Birthday!!!):
breakfast: Bob Evans with some friends (kind of like a Denny's/IHOP type place)
lunch: sandwich
dinner: Chipotle (my birthday treat to myself ;) )

breakfast: SlimFast
lunch: sandwich
dinner: grilled cheese, vegetable soup

breakfast: oatmeal
lunch: sandwich
dinner: baked chicken, vegetables

breakfast: oatmeal
lunch: sandwich
dinner: leftovers? sandwich?

Note to self: Next week plan menu before grocery shopping. Duh. ;) It's been kind of a busy weekend and I didn't even get to the grocery until after 6pm Sunday and completely forgot to menu plan beforehand. Oops! Check back tomorrow to see what I was so busy doing Sunday!

Weekly Money Check-Up

Every week, MPP over at My Pretty Pennies hosts a financial fill-in post. If you're new, click on over to check it out.

1. The most I've spent this last week was on bills.

2. Today I am thankful for my awesome friends and family!

3. Money can't buy happiness. One free/inexpensive thing I did this week that made me happy was take my "furbaby" for a walk on Mother's Day.

4. I will consider this week a success if I go the the darn gym and/or run more than once. :)

5. The summer movie I am looking forward to most is Harry Potter VII: Part 2!!!!!!

1/2 Marathon training update

Ok, so I've finally gotten down to business with this 1/2 marathon training thing. I had found a 1/2 marathon training program a while ago, but it's "only" a 12 week program so I haven't really thought about it much since then. And if you clicked on the link, I'm following the "novice" program because even that one has 2, 3, and 4 mile runs in the first week. A friend of mine from college said she used this program and it worked really well.

Since the program is only 12 weeks long, I will start using it around June 26. Until then, my goal is to work up to being able to run 3 miles comfortably. Today I ran only one mile and not so comfortably. The program has a nice little schedule of when you do cross training, when you run, and when you rest. I plan on following a similar pattern leading up to June 26 so that I'm already in a rhythm. Here goes!

Weekly Money Check-Up

Every week, MPP over at My Pretty Pennies hosts a financial fill-in post. If you're new, click on over to check it out.

1. The most I've spent this last week was $70 on presents. This week I'm mailing out 2 birthday presents (1 for my brother, 1 for Manny's sister) and 3 mothers days presents complete with cards.

2. Today I am thankful for my amazing fiance. (Beware, super cheese coming) Even though he is overseas and far far away from me, I am so thankful for him and the job that he does. And am even more thankful that we get to get married in just over seven months!

3. Money can't buy happiness. One free/inexpensive thing I did this week that made me happy was take my puppy dog for a long walk then give him a bath. (I had actually just considered having him groomed but changed my mind, so yay for being frugal!)

4. I will consider this week a success if I get my butt back in the gym! Trust me, it needs it. It won't fit in my favorite jeans anymore. :/

5. One thing I appreciate about my moms are that I have a mom and step-mom who are both so amazing and have influenced my life in so many ways.

Menu Plan Monday

Eek! This is my first one and I'm a little nervous. I don't have fancy recipes and I can't cook very well but I really just want to get a little more organized.

I've decided to start menu planning for two main reasons:
1. more purposeful grocery trips (read: save money!)
2. reduce fast food intake (read: save money and lose weight!)

Well, here goes! :)

breakfast: SlimFast
lunch: carrots, ranch dip, peanut butter and jelly sandwich
dinner: whole wheat pasta with olive oil

breakfast: oatmeal
lunch: turkey and cheese sandwich
dinner: black bean salad (will try and post recipe!)

breakfast: SlimFast
lunch: leftover black bean salad
dinner: grilled turkey and cheese sandwich

breakfast: oatmeal
lunch: peanut butter and jelly sandwich
dinner: chicken and potatoes

breakfast: SlimFast
lunch: pita and hummus
dinner: grilled cheese

May Goals

Starting this past December, I began making a list of monthly goals and posting them here. I find that posting goals on my blog helps keep me a little more accountable. :)

1. Start menu planning.
I've been wanting to do this for a while but am just now getting around to being serious about it. :)

2. Get back to budgeting.
Um, yeah, I've been slacking on this a lot. It's time to get back at it!

3. Complete and post cross stitch project.
So, there's this flower I started working on before Manny went TDY...and it's still not finished...oops. It's actually much more complete than this photo but this is the most recent one I had. :/

4. Do some decluttering/organizing.
Look for posts featuring before and after pictures of rooms/spaces that I've organized! There are too many piles resembling the one below throughout my house.

5. Send out Save the Dates.
These just came in this past week and they look adorable! I'm so excited and cannot wait to send them out!

I'm sure I have a few more things I want to do this month but I also wanted a managable list with this being the first month that Manny is gone and the fact that it's going to be a really busy month around here! I have work (of course), am hosting a bridal shower for a friend, and am (hopefully) having a visit from my best friend! :)

April Goal Review

Starting this past December, I started blogging my monthly goals to try and help myself get things accomplished. At the end of each month I post a goal recap to make myself a little more accountable for the goals I set in the beginning of the month.

1. Enjoy my trip home.
Done. We even had a little party with lots of family. :)

2. Read one book.
Done! Manny and I both read Water for Elephants and then saw the movie.

3. Prepare for Manny's departure.
Ugh...unfortunately, done. And he's gone. :(

Imagine that, I completed them all! ;P I feel like I really let myself off the hook this month as far as goals go but I knew I was going to be completely preoccupied with Manny leaving. Check back for my May goals! :)
